  2. I strongly believe in online help. This file contains only portions 
  3. of the SkyView help file so that you can decide whether or not you 
  4. are interested in installing SkyView, and to give you instructions 
  5. for performing that installation.

  9. Description of SkyView
  10. ======================

  12. SkyView is one of a growing number of astronomy applications for 
  13. Microsoft Windows. The program is designed to perform many of the 
  14. functions of a planetarium. As the name suggests, SkyView shows you 
  15. a view of the sky. The whole sky. It shows everything that you can 
  16. see in the sky from one location at one time.

  18. SkyView displays
  19.  
  20. o  The positions of the sun, moon, and all planets visible with the
  21.    naked eye.
  22. o  All stars down to a limiting magnitude you select.
  23. o  The positions of the ecliptic, celestial equator, galactic
  24.    equator, and equatorial coordinate system lines in any
  25.    combination.

  27. SkyView allows you to
  28.  
  29. o  See the sky as it looked or will look at any date and time
  30.    between the years 1900 and 2100, inclusive.
  31. o  See the sky as it looks from any location on the earth.
  32. o  Orient the sky display so that the North, South, East, or West
  33.    horizon is positioned at the bottom of the window.
  34. o  Print and print preview the sky display.
  35. o  Select the colors used for the window background and many of the
  36.    objects in the sky display.

  38. SkyView was developed with a limited goal in mind. It does not try 
  39. to do everything and display everything related to astronomy. 
  40. SkyView is not the fastest program, and it is not the most accurate. 
  41. SkyView does not display small sections of the sky filled with dim 
  42. stars that you can only see through binoculars or a telescope. It 
  43. does not display deep sky objects such as nebulae, star clusters, or 
  44. galaxies. It does not label constellations or individual stars.

  58. SkyView requires Microsoft Windows 3.1, running in 386 Enhanced Mode.

  61. Hardware Requirements
  62. ---------------------

  64. For the best performance, SkyView should be run on a computer 
  65. equiped with at least a 486 CPU. Not only are such computer fast, 
  66. they are all equiped with a math coprocessor. Computers equiped with 
  67. 486SX and 386 CPUs may contain an optional math coprocessor chip, 
  68. but many do not. SkyView performs very many trigonometric 
  69. calculations to generate the sky display, and these calculations 
  70. take significantly longer to perform without a math coprocessor. A 
  71. sky display that takes seconds to generate on a 486 system will take 
  72. minutes on a 386 system without a math coprocessor.

  74. SkyView requires that you run Windows in a video mode that can 
  75. display 256 colors. It will run in a 16-color video mode, but the 
  76. sky display won't look very good. I've made no attempt to write the 
  77. program for or test it in a 16-color video mode. Hey, this is 1993. 
  78. Decent hardware is pretty cheap.

  80. SkyView requires 800KB of hard disk space.

  91. SkyView is distributed as a compressed file called skyview.zip. This 
  92. archive was created using the utility pkzip 2.04g. The file 
  93. skyview.zip contains the following files.

  107. Installation Instructions

  110. Use the following steps to install SkyView.
  111.  
  112. 1. Create a directory to contain the SkyView files.
  113.    File Manager
  114.    a. Choose the command Create Directory from the File menu.
  115.    b. Type "skyview" as the directory name.

  117.    Norton Desktop for Windows
  118.    a. Choose the command Make Directory from the File menu.
  119.    b. Type "skyview" as the directory name.

  121.    DOS Command Line
  122.    a. Type "md skyview" on the command line.

  124. 2. Copy skyview.zip to the directory you just created.
  125.    File Manager or Norton Desktop for Windows
  126.    a. Drag the file skyview.zip to the directory you just created.

  129.    a. Type "copy skyview.zip c:\skyview" on the command line.

  131. 3. Uncompress the distribution file.

  133.    a. Use your favorite Windows compression/decompression utility to
  134.       uncompress the file skyview.zip. You have probably associated
  135.       the .zip extension with this utility, so you should be able to
  136.       just double-click on the name to uncompress the file.

  138.    DOS Command Line
  139.    a. Type "pkunzip skyview" on the command line.

  141. 4. Create a new group to contain SkyView. If you wish to put the
  142.    SkyView icon in an existing group, skip to step 5.

  144.    a. Choose the New command from the File menu.
  145.    b. Select the Program Group radio button.
  146.    c. Type "SkyView" in the Description field.

  149.    a. Choose the New command from the File menu.
  150.    b. Select the Group radio button.
  151.    c. Type "SkyView" in the Title field.

  153. 5. Add the SkyView icon to a group.

  156.    b. Select the Program Item radio button.
  157.    c. Type "SkyView" in the Description field.
  158.    d. Type "c:\skyview\skyview.exe" in the Command Line field.
